An undergraduate GPA of at least 3.0 (B or better) is expected of applicants. If the overall GPA falls below 3.0, a GPA of 3.0 for the last two years prior to application may be considered adequate.
Applicants are expected to have a combined score of at least 1,000 on the verbal and quantitative (math) portions of the GRE, though students with slightly lower scores are occasionally accepted on probation.
Though not a requirement for admission to the program, a range of undergraduate courses in Art History is highly desirable, as is a reading knowledge of French or German; a reading knowledge of Chinese or Japanese will be especially valuable for students intending to specialize in Asian art.
Application to the Art History Program
Students wishing to enter the program should apply to the LSU Graduate School.
The following materials are required:
→ Application for Admission to the Graduate School, including a narrative statement of purpose
→ Application Fee
→ One set of official transcripts of all previous college or university work
→ Appropriate test scores (GRE and, for many international applicants, TOEFL)
Candidates can apply online at gradschool.lsu.edu
The Graduate School may also be reached by telephone at 225.578.2311 or by fax at 225.578.2112.
In Addition
In addition to the material noted above, at least two but preferably three confidential letters of recommendation written on official letterhead stationery are required. These should be sent to the Art History Graduate Coordinator in the School of Art.
The Art History program accepts applicants for both fall and spring semesters, but not for summer semesters. Application deadlines are March 1 for the following fall semester and October 1 for the following spring semester.
