Many changes have occurred over time that have changed and shaped the LSU College of Art + Design. Below is a outline of these changes, to and within the College, that make up its history. It is organized by year, dating back to 1933, and by dean/director of the College and of the individual Units.

2008
Professor Stuart Baron steps down and returns to teaching; Professor Rod Parker is appointed Interim Director of the School of Art. Associate Dean Barrett Kennedy steps down and returns to teaching; Professor Stuart Baron is appointed Interim Associate Dean.

2007
T
he School of Landscape Architecture is renamed The Robert S.Reich School of Landscape Architecture. The School of Architecture's undergraduate and graduate programs are granted 6-year terms of accreditation with a focused evaluation scheduled for Fall 2010.


2006
P
rofessor Bosworth returns to teaching; Professor Tom Sofranko is appointed Interim Director of the School of Architecture.


2005
Professor David Cronrath is named Dean of the College. Professor Frank Bosworth is appointed Director of the School of Architecture. Marsha Cuddeback is named Director of the Office of Community Design & Development. The School of Landscape Architecture's accreditation is extended a full (five-year) term.

2004
P
rofessor Elizabeth Mossop is named Director of the School of Landscape Architecture. Dean Frederick Ortner steps down and returns to teaching; Professor David Cronrath is named Interim Dean. The Master of Architecture program is granted an initial (3-year) term of accreditation.


2003
P
rofessor Stuart Baron is appointed as Director of the School of Art; Professor Michael Crespo returns to teaching. Professor Ritchie is appointed Chair of the Department of Interior Design. Professor Suzanne Turner's appointment as Interim Director of the School of Landscape Architecture ends.

2002
P
rofessor Frederick Ortner is named Dean of the College. Professor Bruce Sharky is appointed as Director the College's International Program. Suzanne Turner is named Interim Director of the School of Landscape Architecture. Departmental status is reinstated to the Interior Design program; Assistant Professor T L Ritchie is named Interim Chair.

2001
T
he College name is officially changed to the College of Art + Design. Associate Professor Wachob returns to teaching and the Department of Interior Design is merged within the School of Art. Professor Saccopoulos retires, and Professor Ken Carpenter is appointed Interim Dean. Professor Michael Daugherty dies, and Professor Crespo is appointed Interim Director of the School of Art. The Interior Design program's accreditation is extended a full (six-year) term. The School of Architecture's accreditation is extended a full (six-year) term.

2000

rofessor David Cronrath is appointed Director of the School of Architecture. Professor Haynes retires, and Professor Barrett Kennedy is appointed Director of the CADGIS Research Lab and Associate Dean for Research. The School of Landscape Architecture's accreditation is extended a full (five-year) term.

1999

rofessor Turner retires, and Professor Marchita Mauck is appointed as Interim Associate Dean. The Office of Community Design & Development (OCDD) is established. Professor Frank Bosworth is named Director.

rofessor Zwirn returns to teaching, and Professor Theis is named Interim Director of the School of Architecture.

1998
The School of Art's accreditation is extended a full (ten-year) term.

1997

rofessor Carpenter returns to teaching, and Professor Christos Saccopoulos is appointed Dean of the College.

1996

rofessor Crespo returns to teaching, and Professor Michael Daugherty is appointed as Director of the School of Art. Professor Suzanne Turner is appointed as Interim Associate Dean.

1995
The School of Landscape Architecture's accreditation is extended a full (five-year) term.

1994

rofessor Theis returns to teaching, and Professor Robert Zwirn is appointed Director of the School of Architecture. The Department of Interior Design's accreditation is extended a full (five-year) term.

1993

chool of Architecture's accreditation is extended a full (five-year) term. The Visual Resources Library is established. Lauren Morgan is appointed as Manager.

1992
A
ssociate Professor Wachob is appointed Chair of the Department of Interior Design. The Office Community Preservation (OCP) is established. Associate Professor Barrett Kennedy is appointed Director. The Foundations Lab is established. Professor Gerald Bower is appointed Director.

1991
T
he Department of Interior Design is established and the Associate Director title is changed to Chair. Professor Milnes resigns, and Professor Michael Crespo is appointed Director of the School of Art. Professor Odenwald returns to teaching, and Professor Bruce Sharky is appointed Director of the School of Landscape Architecture.
The School of Landscape Architecture's accreditation is extended a full (five-year) term.

1990

he School of Landscape Architecture hosts the national student conference (LABASH). The Friends of Hilltop Arboretum fund a Master Plan for the Arboretum. The School of Art's accreditation is extended a full (ten-year) term

Professor Christopher Theis is appointed Director of the School of Architecture.

1987

he first graduate students in Architecture are admitted. The Interior Design program begins a selective admissions process which controls the admission of students to the sophomore year. Professor Garrett returns to teaching, and Professor Robert Milnes is appointed Director of the School of Art. Professor Jack Haynes is appointed Director of the CADGIS Research Lab. Professor Michael Daugherty is appointed Associate Dean.
Professor Heck returns to teaching, and Dean Carpenter serves as Acting Director of the School of Architecture. The School of Architecture's accreditation is extended a full (five-year) term. The Department of Interior Design's accreditation is extended a full (six-year) term.

1986

icrocomputer Office of Design Exploration (MODE) Lab is established. Professor Dan Earle is appointed Director. Dean Nielson resigns, and Professor Kenneth Carpenter is appointed as the Dean of the College of Design. Professor Oppermann returns to teaching, and Professor Heck is appointed Acting Director of the School of Architecture. The Architecture program begins a selective admissions process which controls the admission of students to the sophomore year. The Graphic Design program begins a selective admissions process which controls the admission of students to the sophomore year.

1985
The Louisiana Board of Regents for Higher Education approves the new graduate program in Architecture leading to the MS in Architecture degree.

1984
D
esign Building is completed (Barron, Heinberg, & Brocato Architects). Professor Rutkowski returns to teaching, and Professor Sidney Garrett is appointed Acting Director of the School of Art. The Computer-Aided Design and Geographic Information Systems (CADGIS) Research Lab is established as a joint facility of the College of Design and the Department of Geography and Anthropology.

1983
P
rofessor Odenwald becomes the second Director of the School of Landscape Architecture. Emory Smith donates Hilltop Arboretum (21-acres, 7 miles south of campus) to the School of Landscape Architecture.

1982
R
eich retires, and Professor Neil Odenwald is appointed Acting Director of the School of Landscape Architecture. The Graduate Program in Landscape Architecture is accredited.

1981
P
rofessor Jerry Nielson is appointed Dean of the College of Design. Jack Haynes resumes duties as Associate Dean. Professor Shirlee Singer is appointed Associate Director of the School of Architecture for Interior Design.
Professor Heck returns to teaching, and Professor A. Peters Oppermann is appointed as the Director of the School of Architecture.

1980
M
cLindon retires, and Professor Haynes is appointed Acting Dean. Professor Smothers returns to teaching, and Professor Robert Heck is appointed Acting Director of the School of Architecture.

1979
T
he School of Environmental Design is reorganized as the College of Design and includes the new Schools of Architecture, Art, and Landscape Architecture. All Department Head titles are changed to Director.


1977
T
he first full, five-year accreditation for Interior Design is received. Professor Jack Haynes is appointed Assistant Dean.

1976
P
rofessor Walter Rutkowski is appointed Head of the Department of Fine Arts.

1975
Professor Wilkinson dies and Professor Tom Cavanaugh is appointed Acting Head of the Department of Fine Arts. The Interior Design program applies for initial provisional accreditation by FIDER and a site visit is conducted. The Department of Construction is transferred to General College. Professor Fount Smothers is appointed Head of the Department of Architecture.

1974
T
he new degree, Bachelor of Interior Design, is approved.

1973
D
esign is transferred to the Department of Architecture and Professor Jerry Nielson becomes Associate Head of the program.

1970
T
he Interior Design Program begins in the Department of Fine Arts. Professor Vincent Guaccero is appointed Program Coordinator.

1968
P
rofessor Jack Wilkinson is appointed Head of the Department of Fine Arts. The Department of Construction is added to the School of Environmental Design.

1967
Professor Dufour returns to teaching.

1966
D
epartment of Fine Arts is transferred from the College of Arts and Sciences to the School of Environmental Design. Associate Professor Paul Dufour is appointed Acting Chairman.


1965
The School of Environmental Design is established with Departments of Architecture and Landscape Architecture. Professor Gerald McLindon is named Dean of the School.

1964
L
andscape Architecture is established as a separate department in the College of Agriculture and moved to H. P. Long Fieldhouse. Dr. Reich is named Department Head.

1962
A
five-year professional program (BArch) is accredited in the Department of Architecture.

1960
T
he landscape Design curriculum title is changed to Landscape Architecture and the program is accredited by the American Society of Landscape Architects.

1959
T
he Department of Architecture is established in the College of Engineering and a four-year curriculum is offered leading to the Bachelor of Architecture degree.

1946
A Landscape Design program is begun in the Department of Horticulture offering both graduate and undergraduate studies.

1941
I
nstructor Robert S. Reich joins the Department of Horticulture to establish a program in Landscape Architecture.


1933
T
he Department of Architectural Engineering is established in the College of Engineering and a four-year curriculum is offered leading to the BS in Architectural Engineering.
